James Woods hopes to inspire the students at Thomas Academy as he begins his new position as Assistant Principal there on April 2. He comes to Thomas Academy from South Brunswick High School where he was also Assistant Principal.
Mr. Woods has spent more than 20 years as an educator throughout North Carolina as a principal, assistant principal, athletic director and coach.
“I knew I was going to be in education because I had good coaches and teachers who took care of me and sports kept me out of trouble growing up,” he said. “I appreciate what those teachers did for me in school.”
Mr. Woods said he was looking for a new direction in his career, and Thomas Academy was the right fit.
Growing up on a farm in North Carolina, Mr. Woods said he connects with students who have struggles in their lives and wants to inspire Thomas Academy students to reach their goals.
“All students need help regardless of their backgrounds,” he said.
When he’s not at school, Mr. Woods enjoys listening to music and exercising. He also coaches two baseball teams. He has some ideas for how Thomas Academy can expand its athletics program.
“My biggest thing right now is getting there and learning the students, being visible, getting out in the community. Maybe we can add sports like volleyball or soccer. Sports saved my life so if we can add another sport, it gives students an outlet from the academic side.”
Welcome to Thomas Academy and the Boys & Girls Homes’ family, Mr. Woods!
