Lake Waccamaw, NC – The 2022 Thomas Academy science fair ended in a tie for first place.
Amelia and Lorelei Hopkins’ project “Dissolve: Which Substance Dissolved Gummies Fastest” tied with Wesley Smith’s project “Mold.”
“All of our participants put in a strong effort to make their projects competitive,” said Thomas Academy Principal Dr. Cathy Gantz. “Part of the Thomas Academy educational experience is hands on learning. A science fair allows for students to learn and apply the scientific method on projects of their choosing.”
Additional projects included a vehicle made of recycled objects, a volcano, a study on the skeletal system, and a demonstration of the impact of blockages on airways.
Teacher Tara Haynes coordinated the event with judging of the competition done by fellow teachers Drake Harper, Courtney Swoboda, and Leo Wilson.
“It was our first year doing a science fair and we are hopeful that there will be even more participants next year now that the students have seen the opportunity in action,” Gantz said.
