Thomas Academy student wins essay competition

The Wilmington Optimist Club has named Thomas Academy’s Celia Mitchell as the club’s winner in the local Optimist International Essay Competition.

“This essay contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people room to develop their own views around a central idea,” said Club President Ray Cockrell. “In addition to the opportunity for written expression, participants have the chance to win a college scholarship.”

This year’s topic set by Optimist International was “How Does an Optimistic Mindset Change My Tomorrow?”

“I entered the competition because I wanted to challenge myself,” said Mitchell. “Writing non-fiction is something I’m not good at. I also enjoy writing. I wanted to give up so many times, but (Thomas Academy JROTC instructor) Sergeant LeClair pushed me to continue to do so. I’m glad that I did so because writing the essay I learned so much.

“When I heard that I came in first place I was overjoyed,” she continued. “I didn’t expect to win. I doubted myself when others believed in me. I wasn’t very optimistic and that was what I wrote about. So I want to thank Sergeant LeClair for pushing me and believing in me.”

In winning the local contest, Mitchell receives $100 and is entered in the District level competition that has a first place prize of a $2,500 scholarship and a plaque.

“Celia’s participation in this competition is an example of the community involvement we encourage for our students,” said Thomas Academy Principal Dr. Cathy Gantz. “When students participate in community contests and activities, they become more connected to the people and organizations that make a difference in the world. It helps them to build their connection and character.”
